INFINITI reveals 'Prototype 9' at 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Nissan Motor Corporation and INFINITI unveiled a sleek, open-wheeled electric retro-roadster prototype at the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours D'elegance named Prototype 9.

The car celebrates the ingenuity, artistry, and craftsmanship of INFINITI as well as representing a reimagining of a 1940's race car. It has been developed with time-honoured production techniques to realize its retro design.

Started as a simple sketch during after hours, the Prototype 9 has been brought to life by passionate employees across the Nissan Motor Corporation.

The car is powered by prototype electric motor and battery from Nissan's advanced powertrain department. This contrasts with the more traditional material and techniques applied to the car such as the hand-beaten panels buy a team of the company's master craftspeople.

The inspiration for Prototype 9 comes from the emerging era of Japanese motorsport.

Prototype 9 has been carefully constructed with traditional crafting methods and features a bare sheet metal-skin finish

Wrapped around a steel ladder frame, the vehicle's elegant bodywork is made from steel body panels. The panel beaters incorporate INFINITI's signature design elements such as double-arch grille, 'shark gills' aft of the front wheels, a single-crease hood, and sharp lines that stretch from front to reat.

"The beautiful execution of Prototype 9 represents a combination of artistry, craftsmanship and commitment to a romantic notion of our heritage. It inspired our people to work on Prototype 9 in their own time - as they were completely invested in the project and the details and features originated with them. Prototype 9 has been a labor of love for many of us." Said Alfonso Albaisa, Senior Vice President, Global Design.
