2014 INFINITI Q50 Can Steer Itself
December 17 2013, 401 Dixie INFINITI
The 2014 INFINITI Q50 debuts with a system called Direct Adaptive Steering (DAS). This is known in the industry as drive-by-wire, the INFINITI Q50 controls steering using an all-electronic method (don't worry, there is a back-up mechanical system).
Direct adaptive steering bypasses the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the wheels that meet the road. Sensors measure how a driver turns the wheel and send that data through an electronic controller to actuators, which, in turn, pivot the steering rack. There's no physical link between the road and the steering wheel, drivers don't feel jarring bumps or vibrations, but the system does electrically simulate natural steering resistance.
Computers vary steering ratio and power assist for easier low-speed maneuvers and high-speed stability.
Adaptive steering is yet another step toward autonomous cars. A computer can think faster and smarter (and in all directions at once) to avoid dangers on the road.
